This is a fact I didn't see coming. The sweet smell before and after thunderstorms is poisonous and in high concentration will destroy your lungs. You are actually breathing ozone... Ultraviolet light in the atmosphere splits O2 molecules, with the freed oxygen atoms sometimes joining with oxygen molecules for an ozone feast. Luckily during a storm it doesn't reach a density to start to destroy your cells in your lungs....
“Ozone” comes from the Greek “ozein,” meaning “to smell.
